Legal Aid of North Carolina’s Fair Housing Project recently resolved a housing discrimination complaint filed against a private landlord on behalf of a female victim of domestic violence. The complaint alleged that the landlord treated our client less favorably than her husband, even though a court had found that she was the victim of domestic violence and had granted her a Domestic Violence Protective Order requiring her husband to leave their home.
The resolution of the case, which alleged violations of the federal and State Fair Housing Acts, includes a confidential monetary settlement, as well as requiring the landlord and employees to attend fair housing and domestic violence training.
Suzanne Chester, who handled the case, said, “The collateral damage of housing discrimination can be catastrophic for victims of domestic violence. Legal Aid of North Carolina is committed to helping victims of domestic violence exercise their legal rights and working to ensure they have access to safe housing free of discrimination.”
